Negative of the Sister Mary of the Sacred Heart and young children in graduation cap and gown in front of sign at Saint Gabriel's Catholic Church located at 323 E. Grand Avenue in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas. Arriving in Arkansas in 1908, the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity Refuge bought the Williamson Place on Malvern Avenue in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas to use as a monastery and converted the barn into to Saint Michael's Catholic School the next year. The Sisters opened Saint Augustine School, a Catholic school for African American children, in 1916. St. Augustine was renamed St. Gabriel School when the Rev. Father John M. Haines took over in 1941. From 1916 to 1944, the sisters also maintained St. Gabriel's, until the Sisters of the Sacred Heart from Chicago took over the school. St. Gabriel's Church was listed in the phone book until 1972 and St. Gabriel's School was listed until 1974.
